Reflective Purposes

image

There is a new roommate in my apartment. I’m not entirely thrilled with the idea, but he seems nice enough. Nearly chased me out the door talking about Final Fantasy.

I had to get away though. So far I’ve found myself in two parks. The first had a farmers market. Not the best choice since I was hungry so I went to Park Avenue instead. It’s quiet and breezy. My only regret is not having my sketch pad or book.

I am currently sitting in front of a fountain. It’s quite lovely really. It has a lady in the middle playing a harp. The strings are water. I’m sure it is a common fountain.

Though it struck me oddly this time. A little sad even. It’s bad enough the lady is made of stone but to give her a harp that she could never play. It’s cruel. She has no control. Forced to look at something she can never do.

At least I can move around. Find something I can do. I guess my main take away is that I have control. No one else can determine for me what I will do. Where I will sit.

Thanks fountain lady. I needed that reminder. Now I’ll head back to my apartment and see what the purpose of this new person is. I should know by now, people cross our paths for a reason that we might not see.

What the Future Holds – A look at The Age of Light

I love my main project, I love it a lot. Sometimes even I forget the size of the story though. Since I’m a very linear worker I always start at the beginning and go from there. Today however I got an itch. The words were popping around in my head for quite some time today so I decided to write down this little bit.

This is part of a chapter in the first book of The Age of Light series. It follows a young girl named Alerxia and takes place a very long while after the events of The Order of Atlantis series. It might give a little bit away from the first series, but not much. Enjoy!

* * *

Alerxia stared up at the night sky, the cloudless beauty was a refreshing view from the heavy lights of the metropolis she used to live in. She couldn’t believe she was there. The ground around her was covered in snow, hiding the ruins of the ancient city. She wrapped herself a bit tighter in her heavy jacket, trying to fight off the cold just a bit longer to take it all in.

She lost herself between the sky and ground, trying to imagine the city up and alive all around her. Reconstructing the view in her mind from old pictures she had seen. It wasn’t working so well, the cold was starting to bite a little too hard. She made to go back inside, something caught her eye. A faint glimmer in the snow. Curiosity getting the better of her she wandered down the steps of the temple into the ruins of the city.

It’s not the far away, I just want to see what it is and I’ll go back. Students weren’t allowed to wander into the city. The rubble was unstable after thousands of years of decay. As she traveled forward Alerxia realized the glimmer was a pulsating glow. Very weak, but still emitting a signal of some sort.

After a few slips in the snow she knelt down to the source of the light. She brushed away a layer of chilly fluff to reveal an active console. It was flickering, but the images were still decipherable, It looked like Earth, but the view showed the space around the planet up to a few kilometers.

“You really shouldn’t be wandering around you know.” Alerxia felt her heart fall into her stomach. She turned like lightning to meet her blue eyes with the striking eyes of a very old man.

“Master Colin!” Se dropped to the ground in a bow, “Please accept my apologies, my curiosity got the better of me.” She clenched her eyes, tensing her body in preparation of a lashing. Instead she got a soft chuckle. She looked up. Colin was standing over her, extending an aged hand to lift her to her feet.

“My dear, there is no need for such formalities. I see you have found the source of what I was looking for.” He reached into his coat, pulling out a small device. It beeped and clicked when he opened it. “I received a sudden power reading from the city, I thought it a bit odd so I came to investigate.” Alerxia couldn’t help but take in his truly ancient look. Stark white hair and beard covering a wrinkled face. Despite his appearance she got the feeling of youth from him. Not at all what she expected.

He took a knee by the console, examining its flickering screen. Alerxia took an anxious place next to him, a mixture of fear and continued curiosity tossing around in her stomach. He pressed the console lightly, changing its screen. He hummed at it for a moment, pressing a few more keys before speaking.

“How interesting.”

“What is it, “master?” Alerxia listened intently, seeing if she could figure out the images on the console for herself.

“According to this we’re about to get a visitor.” He stood up, looking upwards at the sky.

“A visitor?”

“It’s very curious. This console was part of the Atlantean Deep Space Monitoring Program. It would seem that some of the satellites are still sending signals. Follow me dear, we don’t want to be rude to our guest.” He started walking further away from the temple, a surprise to Alerxia. Even more shocking was that he was bringing her along. Colin ran the temple and headed all of its operations. He was hardly ever seen except for large feasts and it was rare for him to interact with the students at all.

She strode quickly to keep up with his fast steps. He had no issues walking over the snow as Alerxia fell into a hole every few feet. Her face flushed with embarrassment. They walked in silence for what seemed like hours until Alerxia realized they were walking into what used to be the residential district of the city. It was completely flat, the snow had covered everything in its blanket.

“Funny how even with the snow I know where everything is. There was a house here once.” Colin looked at the ground.” Some very good friends of mine lived there.”

“Where are they now?” she asked dumbly. The question snapped Colin out of his nostalgia and he took on a quizzical expression.

“I don’t know. It’s been a few hundred years since I contacted them. I should probably do that when we get back. I think this is what we’re looking for.” He pointed upwards to what appeared to be a star.

Alerxia squinted at the small speck of light and realized it was moving, and getting brighter. “Master, what is it?”

“I don’t know, We’ll be finding out soon.” The speck was getting larger and brighter at an alarming rate. “Looks like it’s about to hit the atmosphere.” There was a flash as the speck blazed with fire. A powerful boom rolled across the snowy plain as the object made it though the atmosphere. It’s shape was more visible now. Sharp and pointed as it streaked through the sky closer and closer.

“Master,” Alerxia said with a bit of hesitancy, “Shouldn’t we move?”

“How silly, We’ll be fine.” He smiled pleasantly as the object grew even larger. It’s strange crystalline shape becoming more and more discernible. “It is quite an interesting thing, isn’t it?”

“Umm, yes?” Alerxia was trying to fight of her flight response to the situation. The object was not slowing in speed and seemed to be falling rather than flying. This looks more like space junk, how could it be a visitor?

“You may want to brace yourself, dear.” Colin said. Alerxia looked puzzled before the object hit the ground with a shuddering crash that sent the girl toppling forward. She looked up to see the object sliding through the snow, hitting old remnants of houses as it came, digging the ground around it and leaving a deep trench behind it before it finally skidded to a halt a few feet from where the two were stationed.

Alerxia swallowed hard with relief. Colin seemed delighted. He started towards the object, finally getting a good look at the thing.

It was a crystal. Alerxia was dumbfounded by it. It shimmered and glowed with some strange power that coursed all over its surface. She followed Colin down into the ditch the object had made. There were pieces of old house and indistinguishable rubble all around. The two approached with caution. Alerxia felt the air change, Colin was serious now. He was scanning the area vigilantly for any sign of danger. The young girl doing the same.

The object gave a hiss, steam billowing out of holes all along its sides. The glowing stopped to reveal the object was made of some kind of metal. It became clear to Alerxia that this was indeed some kind of space fairing ship. Colin reached out a hand to stop their advancement. In the darkness of the night it was hard to determine what was going on. The sound of spinning gears filled the air, a thin veil of light started to fall on the ground. A door was opening on the ship.

She watched with wide eyes at the seemingly human silhouette standing in a doorway on the side of the ship. It was holding the side of the doorway.

“I made it,” it said before collapsing into the freshly dug earth.

This Week’s Character Feature: Luke Banks

Luke Banks

Age – 38

Height – 6′

Weight – 160

Eye Color – Blue

Hair Color – Dark Brown

Luke is introduced in Chapter 3 of Elder’s Secret.

Luke was born in Atlantis to Sarah and Horace Banks. He was very unexpected and born ten years after his brother, Greg. His parents were shocked at the news since they thought they were no longer able to have children. They accepted it as a miracle of sorts and were excited at the growth of their family. Luke was in his third year of school when his mother was killed on assignment to the surface. Horace fell apart afterwards. Three years later he had a complete breakdown and Luke was placed in the care of his brother.

Greg was 21 when the burden of looking after his younger brother was placed upon him. Greg was involved in a number of advanced training and research programs by now, getting ready to be placed into the Order. This left Luke alone quite often. More often than should have been allowed. He started to take more advanced classes. By the time he was ready to graduate from school he had been taking the advanced courses needed to enter the Order. After he received his certification from the school Greg was sent out of the City to begin his research work for the Order. At this point Luke still had a number of classes and training regimens to complete before the Order would give him his desired position.

He found his own place and continued his studies. He was training to become a Special Operations Agent for the Order. There were only two other people in training with him: Sabrina Verse and Walter Kessler. While Luke tried to keep to himself, Sabrina quickly formed a bond between them, before Luke had even realized. He saw her as a friend, and someone he trusted with his life in a tight situation. The two excelled at all aspects of their curriculum and upon completion the Order saw fit to keep them partnered together.

Three years had passed since Greg left for his assignment and he appeared again at Luke’s doorstep without notice. His return brought his fiance Karen to Luke’s door too. The two had met during their research assignment and were getting married in a few days. Greg asked Luke to be his best man. It was the only option for him really. Luke was the only family left, but he felt put out. The two had never really built a relationship. Greg was always so focused on doing what he wanted when he wanted he missed most of Luke growing up. He accepted the position and stood by his brother and watched as the two near strangers married. Soon after, Karen was pregnant. They stayed in the city until the baby was born. This gave Luke the time to build a relationship with his brother.

The time Greg spent out of Atlantis made him realize how he had neglected his only sibling. Luke was still a bit wary of the relationship, but after the baby was born the bond was solidified. Greg and Karen named their baby Colin. Luke was attached at once. He felt the want to protect his nephew. To make sure he was always safe. He only had a few months with Colin before the parents were assigned a new research location on the surface. They took Colin with them, Leaving Luke alone again.

Luke was positioned in the Investigation and Retrieval department of the Special Operations. His job was to monitor all psionic manifestations around the globe and then mobilize a team to investigate the situation and retrieve the newly found psionic before the witches did. After a year he was given a short break to go visit his brother on the surface. Just as he was getting ready to leave, news had come to Atlantis that the research outpost Greg and Karen had been working had been attacked. There were no survivors.

Four years later, Luke never accepted it. He knew in his heart that Colin was still alive. He used every resource at his disposal. Hunted down ever lead, did a few questionable methods of information gathering, but eventually he found Colin. Covered in sealing spells and barriers all over a small town in central Florida. Unable to move in, they had to wait. It took eleven years of waiting before Colin broke the seals binding his powers. Thanks to Luke’s efforts the Order was able to react immediately to Colin’s manifestation. Even if he would never take credit for it.

That’s some background on Luke Banks. To find out what happened after Colin manifested you’ll just have to wait for the book to be published. Stay tuned for more Character Profiles. There are a lot more people to learn about.

The Vomit of Writing

I sat around for the majority of the day playing video games. All the while telling myself I should be writing. It’s a bit funny to think about the fact that as much as I love writing, half the time I feel so unmotivated to do it. That is until I actually sit down and start working on it. Then I can’t stop myself after that. A positive and a negative really. The positive being that I am writing, the negative being that I usually end up writing until two or three in the morning and have to be at work at six AM.

Something I have noticed, especially when working on a new project or when I start to go out of my outline for a novel is that it feels like I’m vomiting words. It’s the most interesting thing because it often physically drains me. The shear pull of words and story that can come spewing out can be overwhelming. It was just something I found interesting.  I mostly find it interesting because I’ve noticed authors tend to have similar experiences so I’m sure that many can relate with this.

Now then, I have to return to my vomit. And to all my fellow authors I wish you a happy vomiting session.

Let’s Get Developed

After taking a fairly extensive break while in school I think it is time to finish making our world. Today we will be creating a structured society for our previously made lizard people.

Let’s first look at how advanced do you want your lizard people to be. Are they fairly primitive? Perhaps they are in a state of development like the Renaissance. Since I have a love of science fiction we’re going to have a more advanced race of lizards. They’re going to be sitting on about a hundred years of space exploration. This makes them relatively new in the realm of space. So they’re technology is advanced, but not as davanced as some of the other races that could be flying around out there.

Now that we have a basic developmental stage we can look at governmental structures. Are we looking at a dictatorship? A democracy? A republic? At this point you need to think of the goal of your story. If we have a dictatorship most likely you are looking at a military power looking for more power. This would result in a more invader based storyline. Or at least something heavily focused on political and military agendas. For the other forms of government we can find an exploration based society or a diplomatic one. This is also under the assumption that you have a single governing force on the planet.

Today we are going with a dictatorship government controlling the entire planet. If you are going for a more complex storyline you could have any number of governments on your planet, each with separate goals and trying to either cooperate or defeat their fellow people on the planet. Since we have a dictatorship we’re going to look into have an invading force.

At this point we have the essential basics of a world to make a story in. We have a fairly advanced reptilian race of people living in a dictatorial society with a military focus that is working towards interstellar invasion. This is a fantastic start. And there is still an immense amount of detail to flesh out before we really start to write our story.

Our next goal is to examine the extent of this races technology. this is ranging from weaponry, space ships, and everyday communication devices. I encourage everyone to start realizing the truly endless possibilities involved in world creation. Keep on writing!
